Balancing Act: Country Maid Proves Flexibility is Achievable, even in Manufacturing

Organizational Snapshot

At Country Maid, our mission is “Helping Others Help Each Other.” Born from a desire to stay on the family farm during the 1991 farming crisis, we began by selling baked goods. Today, our founding product, the Butter Braid® Pastry, is sold exclusively through fundraisers for causes our community cares about, particularly youth programs. Our core values: Faith, Integrity, Attitude, Discipline, Relationships, Growth, and Balance guide everything we do, from the quality goods we bake to the supportive culture we build. We strive to treat everyone with compassion and respect, keeping a family feeling at the heart of our business.

“With six children, my wife and I have lived the beautiful chaos of family life, and I know firsthand that when people feel supported at home, they can bring their best to work. From our earliest days, our founders believed that if we honored God and cared for people, He would bless the work of our hands. A family-friendly workplace is one way we continue that legacy today."

Family Friendly Policy Overview

Country Maid’s family-friendly initiatives are designed to ensure team members never have to choose between work and family. Every year, leadership asks the team two simple but important questions: “What about your work life makes your home life hard?” and “What about your home life makes your work life hard?” The feedback they receive helps the company shape and improve benefits to better support everyone.

  • New Parent and Child Care Benefits: Country Maid goes the extra mile to support its working parents’ transition into parenthood. These benefits include paid maternity and paternity leave, ramp-on/off scheduling, and new baby gifts. One added benefit from employee feedback is the “Bundle of Joy” bonus. It gives new parents a monetary bonus during the baby’s first year to help with child care, giving them the flexibility to soak up all those important moments.
  • Flexibility and Family Support: The company prioritizes family support with flexible schedules, remote work options for office employees, and paid time off for parents to attend to their families’ needs, like school calls and college visits. Manufacturing employees also benefit from the company’s flexibility, allowing them to leave as needed for important family matters, a rare and valuable benefit in their field.
  • “Pick Your Pay”: Employees get to choose what works best for them: an annual merit bonus, extra paid time off, or a mix of both. It’s all about giving them the flexibility to tailor their benefits to fit their family’s needs.
  • Mental and Spiritual Health Benefits: Country Maid’s comprehensive employee support includes an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for confidential support, extensive mental health coverage, paid bereavement policies, and paid bereavement counseling. They also have an on-site chaplain who provides weekly guidance and confidential support for employees, and is available for off-site assistance in times of need.

Policy Implementation Overview

  • Retention and Engagement: Flexibility has been the single most impactful policy, significantly boosting employee engagement and retention. While the ROI of flexibility can be hard to quantify, its effects are felt throughout the organization. It symbolizes the company’s commitment to its employees, especially deskless workers who don’t typically experience flexibility as a benefit, and is a key benefit highly valued by new hires. This commitment is reflected in the company’s retention and recruitment metrics – its turnover rates are consistently less than 50% of national benchmarks, showcasing strong loyalty and long-term commitment across all roles. Additionally, even in a historically challenging labor market, the company has maintained a waiting list of candidates eager to join its Production team over the last two years, clear evidence that its culture and benefits make it an employer of choice.
  • Employee-Ownership: For over 20 years, Country Maid has been an employee-owned company, empowering its team to contribute to its success and secure their own retirement. By teaming up to create a financially healthy business, they build a culture where everyone takes responsibility and looks out for each other.

The Impact

Country Maid’s commitment to flexibility and employee well-being reflects its dedication to building a people-first, family-oriented workplace. Benefits like the “Bundle of Joy” and “Pick Your Pay” bonuses empower team members to thrive professionally while caring for their families. And when your staff excels, your business outcomes improve as well. Daily Happy-or-Not scores have averaged 90% or greater for four consecutive years, placing Country Maid in the top 5% of their industry, demonstrating consistently strong employee sentiment and engagement.

Employee Feedback

“Being part of a company that truly values families has made an immeasurable difference in my life. As a parent of two, flexibility is essential, and this workplace allows me to be fully present for the moments that matter—whether that means attending my children’s events or working from home when needed. My manager genuinely cares about my family and thoughtfully considers how work may affect my time with them. That kind of support creates an environment of trust, reduces stress, and allows me to bring my best self to work. When a company invests in your family, it inspires deep loyalty, and I am sincerely grateful to work for an organization that lives its family-first values every day.”
